Soccer Warm Ups and the Importance of Soccer Drills

How many of you believe that soccer warm ups are important? Most parents and to some extent coaches believe that young players do not have the need to warm up. But I’m here to tell you otherwise. By creating a structured training session with plenty of time for your players to warm up, you give them a gift that will last a life time. Young players will develop a great habit and reduce the risk of injuries.

Never allow your players to stretch before they have warmed up. The warm up should involve a light jog around the park until their bodies warm up and start to sweat.Once the body core temperature has risen a few degrees, only then should you allow your players to stretch. Once the core muscles are pumping with blood they become more elastic and have greater flexibility.

Once your players have finished their light jog you can proceed to the stretching phase of the warm up. Static stretching is a thing of the past and has been replaced with dynamic warming up and stretching. This simply means that the warm up and stretching will be done using the same motions and movements that are needed during the heavier loads of the session. Basically same movements but at a slower more controlled pace.

For this drill each player takes hold of a ball. They hold the ball slightly away from their bodies while trying to hit the ball with their knees. They continue this exercise for about 30 seconds changing and using alternate knees. This drill is great for warming up the quads which are used to power your knee lifts. The motion is also great for stretching the quads, groin areas and hamstrings. The required knee lifts also ensures the players heart rate increases preparing the players for the rest of the session.

This drill requires the players to work in pairs. One player holds the ball in front of him while the other player tries to kick the ball with his toes. The sequence of the drill requires the player to change legs after each contact with the ball. Left toe followed by right toe and so on. This drill should last about 30 seconds and players should change positions and roles.This drill gives your hamstrings a good work out. Not only does it increase the blood flow to the legs but it also gives your hamstrings a great stretch and increases your stretching range.

This drill is a continuation of the second drill. Now each player will try and kick the end of their fingers with their toes. Just pretend to kick a ball and follow through reaching up towards your fingers. Right leg will follow through to the left hand and vice-versa. This drill gives your hamstrings are greater stretch and also replicates the motion of kicking which will be needed later on in the session.

Once your players have warmed up and spent some time stretching, introduce some balls into the training session and continue to increase the pace and the work loads of the training drills.

Aikido Techniques – Ki Extension: The Power Comes from the Center

In Star Wars the hero, Luke Skywalker, is mentored by Obi Wan Kenobi, who spoke of the Force as an invisible energy field that “flows through us”. Many of us that practice the martial art of Aikido believe that ki energy is similar in that it also in the central focus of our power. There are two important concepts, which help us develop Ki energy: The Unbendable Arm, and Breathing to Relax the Mind

The Unbendable Arm – Is it possible that the invisible energy can keep the arm from bending? In a word, yes. Ki energy is an invisible force, which lies just beneath the surface. In order to help a student understand that such power does actually exist and that it can be harnessed, the unbendable arm exercise has been developed. One can imagine that Ki energy is similar to water, which is stored in a huge lake we refer to as our One-point or center. We can then imagine that our mind can direct this flow of water out of our arm as if to put out an imaginary fire. What they learn is that it is much more difficult to bend an arm in this state than it is when it is held rigid with pure muscle power. The fact that this state can be achieved even when we instruct our students to maintain relaxed hands by wiggling their fingers tends to further reinforce the concept that the arm is kept unbendable by using a power that goes beyond the muscle.

Breathing to generate mental relaxation – The focus of the four principles of Aikido is to generate Ki energy or power though relaxation of the mind. Aikido practitioners believe that the relaxed mind is essential to the unimpeded flow of Ki. This relaxed mental and physical state does not just happen, in fact the more extraneous thoughts that run through the mind, the more Ki flow is restricted. Misogi breathing helps the student to release these stressful thoughts and to relax by focusing on breathing. The student sits comfortably, with eye half closed, and imagines that breath is flows into the nose, through the mind and down into the center or one-point, which expands with the breath. In the exhalation phase of the exercise the breath moves from the center through the mind and out the mouth in an “ahhhh” sound. The goal of this exercise is to release all extraneous thoughts permitting the mind to relax and that the breathing becomes the all encompassing focus of the mind. Through Misogi breathing, the mind and body become united rather than disconnected where tension from the mind creates tension in the body.

Aikido techniques can flow smoothly only when the body is completely relaxed. When in a relaxed state, one is aware of their surrounding and potential threats. When one is relaxed, the weight is truly on the underside making leading movements and connections solid and powerful. Finally, a relaxed mind and body permits ki to flow in an unrestricted manner generating substantial power and force. It is the harmonization of energies, like the joining of two streams, that permit energy to be redirected and for balance of uke to be disturbed, creating the opening for the desired Aikido technique.

Just as Yoda draws upon the Force for energy in Star Wars, Aikido practitioners draw upon the power of Ki, which originates from the one-point or center. Tools, such as the unbendable arm and Misogi breathing can help us develop this energy as we strive to relax completely. Aikido, then, helps us join the mind and body so that this Ki energy can be maximized.

How Can Stretching Benefit My Health?

Your body is meant to be able to bend down low and pick up something on the floor, or reach something high up on a shelf. This is all down to the flexibility you have in your body to bend and flex.

* The most common stretch done by athletes is the sit and reach, where you sit on the floor, legs together and pointing outwards and in front of them. You then bend and try and touch your toes with the tips of your fingers.

* It is best to do all your stretching in a span of 10 minutes as this will give the body enough oppurunity to move around and flex your muscles. You are then more prepared for more difficult and harder muscle movements.

How Does Stretching Benefit Me?

* Increases Movement – Your range of movements will increase as your muscle and tendons increase in length due to stretching. It can prevent injuries from occuring.

*Improve Your Skills – You can improve your basketball, football, tennis skills or become more active in life in general with a greater range of movement.

* Prevents Injury – When your muscles and joints are more flexible, it takes more for you to ‘pull a muscle’ or ‘tear a tendon’ as you have more give in your limbs. It also helps you recover faster and better if you do get injured.

* Reduces Tension in the Muscles – If you regularly stretch, it is less likely for your muscles to contract and build up muscle tension or pain.

* Gives You Energy – Having the knowledge that you can accomplish more things physically will keep you active and energized as you’ll want to do those physical things.

Lawsuits are Pending against the Zimmer Durom Cup

In 2006 Zimmer Durom Cup Hip Implants were approved for use in the United States. Within less than 2 years, more than 12,000 patients were functioning using a Durom Cup as a replacement device for a defective hip joint. Although these implants had been used for 3 years in Europe prior to being approved in the U.S. and had exhibited a high rate of success, in the U.S. patients started developing problems, some almost immediately after surgery. Their doctors, looking for reasons why the implants failed, decided that the Durom Cup was a defective device.

In most U.S. states, laws are in place to help patients who suffer due to defective prosthetic devices. The laws are designed to compensate them for pain, medical expenses, and the loss of wages caused by their problems with orthopedic procedures resulting from a malfunction of a prosthetic device. Zimmer, while not admitting to producing an inferior product based on its success rate in Europe, voluntarily pulled the cup from the U.S. markets in July, 2008 pending further investigation.

By using Google to search the Internet for “Zimmer Durom Cup Lawsuits” you can find many websites of attorneys who feel that patients have a case against Zimmer and offer to help them file lawsuits. The number of implant failures continues to grow, and these attorneys who have taken it upon themselves to become involved truly believe that Zimmer is at fault. Physicians tend to agree and estimate that hundreds of the devices will fail within the next few years.

Doctors who have done further surgery to determine the cause of patient discomfort have found that the cups have loosened over time to the point where they just pop from the sockets at the slightest touch. Other patients have devices which have actually migrated a short distance in their bodies so they are no longer located exactly where they should be. Although Zimmer contends that the rate of failure of the Durom Cup is quite low, physicians believe that hundreds of them will fail and need revision within the next few years.

Stockholders in Zimmer stocks feel that the company did not pull the product from the market quickly enough causing additional problems for patients. With this feeling in mind, stockholders filed a class action lawsuit in Indiana seeking damages for those who invested in company stocks between January and July, 2008. These stockholders and their attorneys believe that Zimmer should have suspended sales before January 22, 2008 when a large number of problems began to surface.

Zimmer still pleads its case that its Durom Cup is not to blame for the surgical failures in the United States. Instead they contend that physicians did not receive adequate training for doing the procedure. Even so, in October, 2008, Zimmer announced that it had reserved $47.5 million to pay claims won in lawsuits against it. In July it was shown that the failure rate of cup implants could be as high as 5.7%. Zimmer states that this money is not being reserved for all patients and revisions but only for “revisions associated with surgeries that predate the company’s voluntary suspension and which also occur within two years of the original surgery date.” The resolution of this problem remains to be seen.

Building Muscle The Right Way

One of the most important aspects of life is physical fitness. The fitness routines we choose to work into our every day lives can help to build muscle and thus increase strength and metabolism. With more and more people falling into the definition of obese or overweight, the time to build muscle and become more physically active through fitness is now and everyone needs to jump on the band wagon.

Very few people actually understand how the body can build muscle. The art of fitness is surrounding in cardio and aerobic exercise and even some of the most avid fitness people have little idea of how the body chooses to build muscle. These rules are simple, but effective.

Ready the muscle. From the first moments of beginning a routine to build muscle, the fitness program needs to incorporate stretching. In order to build muscle, many muscle building magazines aim at higher amounts of hydration up to 1 gallon per day.

Just rip it. In order to build muscle, one must first rip the muscle. Muscle ripping happens when weights are used to lift repetitions over and over again. Once the muscle reaches a fitness level where it can not longer lift the same weight again, or make another repetition, the body has begun to build muscle. These rips are the key to increasing muscle, strength and metabolism. The fitness program should end with stretching to spread out and release the lactic acid in the muscle. Lactic acid causes the pain felt after a fitness workout.

Healing Time. At least 24 hours are required to build muscle. This means that the same muscle groups of the body should only be worked on alternating days with one day of rest in between. On the off day, the fitness routine can include exercises to build muscle on other parts of the body or cardio. There is no way around the time needed to build muscle, at least 24 hours is REQUIRED, not suggested.

Play it again. The muscle needs to be worked over and over again in order to build muscle. A fitness program can not stop, or pause, it must keep moving just like th body to build muscle. The muscle can forget what you are trying to do if left alone for too long and wither away. Never allow the muscle to forget and stick with the on – off – on schedule to build muscle.

In order to build muscle, the fitness program must first be set upon the rules of the muscle build. Without the knowledge of how a muscle builds, it is often easy to break these rules and create muscle pain and weakness that essentially dooms the program. Learning how to build muscle sis as easy as following these steps over and over again.

The Human Character Of Leigh Steinberg

Ive been following the 2009 Super Bowl progress for the last few weeks. In doing so, I read tons of player and team stats, articles on coaches and their philosophies and many other topical NFL discussions. While reading these articles on the net, I came across one blog, SportsAgentBlog.com where the writer interview Leigh Steinberg.

If youve been around sports for a while, you might remember that Leigh Steinberg is THE sports agent who represented some of the best in the industry: Warren Moon, Troy Aikman, Joe Montana and Steve Young? Hes the person who inspired the classic Tom Cruise movie, Jerry Maguire.

After reading this blog, I have to say I really admire Leigh Steinberg for the many things that he has done to inspire athletes, encourage an industry, i.e. sports agencies, to be become more of a community of colleagues, and generally advance the safety of these athletes.

I learned a lot about Leigh Steinberg and what a quality individual he is. He has empathy for his athletes and really tries to lead the way for athletes to represent themselves in a positive way in society. He stressed that athletes are so much in the limelight that they need to become positive roles models to young adults.

I found that Mr. Steinberg is truly a man of integrity who practices what he preaches. One of the causes that he’s been involved in for many years is global warming. He’s been responsible for creating programs and organizing bodies to encourage the sporting world to develop “green” programs in an effort to help stem global warming.

I always felt that athletes, especially the big name stars only cared about fame and fortune. In fact, that is one of the reasons I stopped watching for while. There are so many high profile athletes that you see in the news negotiable multiple, multiple million dollar contracts that it almost gives the wrong impression.

I get the sense that Mr. Steinberg is really trying to make a difference, especially in the sport of football and not just think of the dollars in front of his face. For example, hes advocating for better awareness and protection for players due to concussions. As I recall, this was a huge issue for Steve Young back when he was playing for the San Francisco 49ers. It seemed like he would incur a concussion almost every single game.

I also read with fascination the comments that Leigh Steinberg made regarding athletes and their propensity for voting democrat or republican. It never dawned on me to think about an athlete in that manner. And, why the majority of them choose one party over the other. But, it certainly makes sense, based on the Mr. Steinberg’s description.

I came away feeling, after reading this article, that Leigh Steinberg is really a man of honor. He is more than a popular, wealthy sports agent and really a man of character who cares for individuals and causes.

I encourage any who reads my article to take the time and read this blog. Youll understand the difference between a sports agent and quality, compassionate human being.
